What to paste, and where the file lands.

Is this Dailymotion downloader free? Do I need an account or an app?

It costs nothing, and you need neither. Everything happens on this web page: paste, choose a quality, save. You do not register, install an app or add a browser extension, and the HD qualities are not kept behind a payment.

A Dailymotion login is not needed either. A public video can be watched by anyone, and the tool asks Dailymotion for the same details its player asks for when a visitor presses play.

Can it save a whole playlist or channel?

No. Each lookup handles exactly one video. Bulk saving a channel is the sort of automated traffic that would get the service throttled for every visitor, so it is not available.

A video link that also names a playlist, such as dailymotion.com/video/x8abc12?playlist=x6xyz9, still works: the video is looked up and the playlist part is dropped.

What about live streams?

A broadcast that is still on air cannot be saved, because there is no finished video yet, only a stream still being produced.

Plenty of channels publish the recording once the broadcast is over. That recording has its own link and saves like any other video.

Where does the video end up on my phone?

Your browser decides, not this site. Safari on iPhone and iPad puts it in Downloads inside the Files app; open it there and choose Share, then Save Video, to add it to Photos. Chrome on Android uses the Downloads folder, and most gallery apps show videos from there automatically.

Can't find it? Open your browser's list of downloads before anything else.

The MP4 you get

Format, quality, size, thumbnails and names.

Which of the listed qualities should I pick?

Pick the top row unless space or data is tight. Rows go from highest quality to lowest, so the first one is the best copy Dailymotion offers for that video.

Further down are smaller files, useful when your phone is almost full or you are on a mobile plan. Each row shows a rough size so you can compare.

You only see qualities the video really has. If the list stops at 720p, the upload was 720p or Dailymotion encoded it no higher, and no tool can produce a sharper version than Dailymotion streams.

Does it save Dailymotion videos as MP4?

Yes, at every quality, with H.264 video and AAC sound. That combination plays on today's phones, computers and smart TVs without extra software.

Dailymotion's player receives each video as many short pieces, and newer uploads keep the sound in a separate stream. Your browser joins those pieces into a single, ordinary MP4 you can keep, copy and watch offline, with the same picture and sound as the quality you chose.

Why is one quality called 380p, not 360p?

That is Dailymotion's name for it. The video data lists its standard-definition version as 380, where most other video sites use 360. We show Dailymotion's labels unchanged, so they match the quality menu in Dailymotion's own player.

Is the video re-encoded, downscaled, or watermarked?

None of those. The video and sound for the quality you pick are copied into the MP4 exactly as Dailymotion encoded them. No frame is compressed a second time, nothing is enlarged, and no logo of ours is added.

A logo that hovers over the video in Dailymotion's player may belong to the player rather than the video, and player overlays are not part of the file. A logo that is part of the footage itself, like a TV channel's corner mark, is in the video and stays there.

Can I get just the audio, as an MP3?

Not here. An MP3 means decoding the sound and compressing it again, and this tool only copies what Dailymotion sends without converting anything.

To get the audio alone, save the MP4 and pull the sound track out with a media player or converter you already use. You choose the settings, so the result will be at least as good.

Can I save the thumbnail too?

Yes. Below the qualities, the video's cover image is offered on its own in several sizes, biggest first, and it saves as a normal JPEG.

Do downloads include subtitles?

Not at the moment. Dailymotion keeps subtitles as separate text files rather than inside the picture, so they are not in the MP4. Captions that the uploader made part of the video image are part of the picture and do come through.

What will the file be called?

Something you can recognise later: the channel, then the video ID, then the quality, plus the time range for a trimmed clip.

  • channelname-x8abc12-1080p.mp4
  • channelname-x8abc12-480p.mp4
  • channelname-x8abc12-720p-000130-000230.mp4

The quality is part of the name because one video can be saved at several, and otherwise each new copy would collide with the last.

How large will the file be?

That depends on how long the video is and which quality you pick. An approximate size appears beside each quality before you start. As a guide, an hour at 1080p can be more than a gigabyte, while the same hour at 480p is a small part of that.

If your data is metered or your storage is nearly full, the lower qualities are there for you. So is Trim, if you only need part of the video.

Data and storage

What our servers see, keep and forget.

Do you store what I download?

No. The pieces of a Dailymotion video pass from Dailymotion's servers through our relay to your browser, which builds the MP4 on your device. Our side writes none of it to a disk or database, and keeps no history of what anyone saved.

This is how the system is built rather than a policy we could quietly change: the relay has nowhere to put a video even if we wanted it to.

What do your servers keep, and for how long?
  • A video's public details from a lookup (title, channel, qualities, cover image addresses) for about ten minutes, so a repeat lookup of the same video does not have to ask Dailymotion again.
  • Lookup-limit counters, which reset every minute.
  • Our hosting provider's standard access logs, used for security and investigating abuse.

No videos, no accounts and no record of downloads. The privacy policy has the full version.

Does Dailymotion see my browser?

Not for the video. Your browser talks to our server, our server talks to Dailymotion, and the video's pieces come back the same way, so Dailymotion sees our server's request rather than yours.

There is one exception, on purpose: the preview picture in your results loads straight from Dailymotion's image servers, with no referrer sent. If you block images on this site, that connection goes away and downloads still work.

Any analytics, ads, or cookies?

None of them. Nothing on this site measures visitors or serves ads, and no cookie is ever set.

Your browser's local storage keeps a single setting, light or dark theme, which never leaves your device.

Browsers without a save dialog, such as Android Chrome, also build each MP4 in their own private storage before handing it to Downloads. That temporary copy stays on your device and is deleted about ten minutes later, or on your next visit.

Error messages

Why a lookup or a download stopped.

It says the video is not available in this region.

Uploaders can restrict a video to some countries. Dailymotion checks the location of whoever asks for the video, and for a lookup made here that is our server's location, not yours.

That means a video that plays for you can be refused here, and occasionally the reverse. No setting on this page changes it, and we do not try to get around regional restrictions.

Can I download a private or password-protected video?

No, and we will not add a way. Those videos are deliberately kept out of public view, and reaching them would mean defeating a protection the uploader turned on.

If the video is yours, you can get your original upload from your own Dailymotion account.

It says the download link has expired.

The stream addresses behind each button are signed and only valid for a limited time. Leave a results page open for hours and those addresses run out, even though the page itself looks unchanged.

Look the video up again to get new ones. Your link and the video are both fine.

Link to this answer

Why am I told I have made too many lookups?

Each address can make only so many lookups per minute. The cap stops a single script from making so many requests that Dailymotion blocks the service for everyone.

The message says how long to wait. Saving videos you have already looked up is not affected; only new lookups count.

Link to this answer

Why does it say Dailymotion is taking too long?

Our server gives each request to Dailymotion about twelve seconds. After that it stops waiting and tells you, instead of leaving a spinner turning indefinitely.

It nearly always passes. Try once more; if it keeps happening for several minutes, the slowness is probably at Dailymotion's end, not a problem with your link.

Copyright

Permission, reuse and takedowns.

Can I download someone else's video and re-upload it?

Only with their permission. A video belongs to the person or company that published it, and saving a copy does not change who owns it.

The tool is meant for keeping your own uploads and videos you have been allowed to keep. Posting another person's video as if it were yours infringes their copyright, however you got the file.

Does Dailymotion allow downloading?

Dailymotion's Terms of Use say content on the service may not be downloaded or copied without prior written consent from Dailymotion or the rights holder, and Dailymotion itself offers no offline-download feature.

So the tool fits your own videos, and videos whose owner has said yes, which is what it is designed for. Our explainer on downloading and copyright goes deeper.

Link to this answer

Can I use a downloaded clip commercially?

Not without a licence from whoever owns it. Ads, client work, paywalled content and monetised compilations all require permission, and "it was publicly viewable" does not count as permission.

Whether a particular use is allowed is a question for a lawyer; a download page cannot answer it for you.

It is my video. Can you remove it from your site?

We have nothing to remove: no copy of your video is kept on our servers. Each download is relayed from Dailymotion to the person who asked for it and then forgotten.

Setting the video to private on Dailymotion, or deleting it, stops this tool from reaching it. A copy someone has uploaded elsewhere has to be reported to that site. Our copyright page explains what we can act on.
